AOTW (Art of the Week): Man in a Blue Smock by Paul Cezanne at the Kimbell Museum

Simple but dignified. See those beige splotches in the smock and the background — that is the canvas. The face is vague, turning the subject into an everyman. At the same time, the face is detailed enough, that the subject feels unusually contemporary. When you get close to most impressionist paintings you get lost in a mess of paint, getting close to this Cezzane, the brushstrokes jump off the page and draw you in. Cue overzealous museum guard.
